





Senior Tax Accountant
Job Summary:
The Senior Accountant position is an integral member of the Southern Company Income Tax Reporting and Forecasting Team. This position is primarily responsible for performing and reviewing detailed tax accounting computations, reviewing and analyzing tax provisions, preparing tax forecasts, and coordinating with internal/external stakeholders. This role will primarily focus on Georgia Power income taxes while occasionally assisting with the income tax accounting and forecasting for the other regulated electric operating companies.
Major Job Responsibilities:
- Provide accounting support to department in the Income Tax Reporting and Forecasting area, which includes monthly closing processes, journal entries, analysis and support of all income tax accounts
- Prepare monthly financial reports for internal and external reporting that summarize various income tax balances
- Perform and assist with the review of quarterly and monthly account reconciliations, tax analytics, and variance explanations
- Plan, prioritize and lead ad hoc projects outside normal recurring tasks
- Identify information gaps and data flow problems that impact income taxes and recommend and coordinate solutions for process improvements and efficiencies
- Collaborate with co-workers outside the SCS Tax Team to ensure overcommunication of important issues that may involve tax
- Provide tax guidance or advice to both accounting and non-accounting co-workers to solve complex accounting issues
- Document/update income tax processes
- Actively engage in knowledge transfer, job training, and assisting less experienced members of the team and organization
- Coordinate, develop, and review responses to information requests from internal customers, PSC, FERC, and internal and external auditors
- Prepare and develop various exhibits, schedules, fact sheets, issue cards, data requests, and other documents as needed for Georgia Power’s rate case filings
- Assist with forecasting deferred income taxes for budget submissions and other ad hoc requests
- Develop and manage relationships and communications between the Tax Accounting department and its stakeholders- Financial Reporting; Financial Planning; Tax Compliance; Accounting Research; Regulatory; Wholesale; Property; and external customers
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting required
- Minimum of 3 years of accounting/tax experience required
- Public accounting experience a plus
- CPA preferred
- Proven knowledge and recent professional experience in accounting and/or income tax compliance, with knowledge of GAAP and book/tax differences (ASC 740)
- Regulatory accounting experience and knowledge of ASC 980 a plus
- Experience with accounting systems (i.e. Oracle ERP and Advanced Excel) desired, and experience with UI Financial Planner and PowerPlan--Tax Provision is a plus
