We are pleased to announce an available position at our nuclear headquarters in Birmingham, AL for a Diesel Generator Principal Engineer. This role is within our Engineering Department, offering support for the Nuclear Fleet's Emergency Diesel Generators.
Emergency Diesel Generator Principal Engineer (Birmingham)
Summary of Position Duties:
This position is assigned to the Nuclear Fleet Engineering Plant Support organization and provides diesel generator expertise and analysis for the Southern Nuclear operating fleet. The Emergency Diesel Generator (EDG) Principal Engineer will strategize innovative methods to improve equipment reliability and to reduce operation and maintenance costs. The ideal candidate must have experience with diesel generators and optimizing diesel performance, knowledge of Nuclear Regulations and best practices in the industry, involvement in industry working groups, plus the ability to troubleshoot issues related to components affecting diesel performance.
Responsibilities:
- Provide both remote and on-site troubleshooting, testing, and field installation of diesel mechanical, electrical, controls, and fuel and air-start delivery systems.
- Determine preventative and predictive maintenance required for EDG systems
- Attend and participate in factory or site acceptance testing
- Be actively engaged with the Design Change team to ensure effective, efficient installation and post-modification testing is successfully accomplished.
- Formulate Life Cycle Maintenance strategy and initiatives for the fleet focusing on capital upgrades, O&M maintenance, and obsolescence plans.
- Develop EDG metrics, health scorecard, and general coordination with respective site organizations (e.g. engineering, maintenance, operations, outage management, etc.) in support of diesel performance and outage implementation.
- Develop and maintain procedures, engineering evaluations and corrective action recommendations for problems and issues.
Job Requirements:
- 8 years minimum power plant experience with 4+ years at either a nuclear site or within corporate engineering working on diesels
- Must be able to satisfy the minimum SNC physical requirements of the position
Educational Requirements:
- B.S. in Electrical, Mechanical, Controls, or Industrial Engineering from an ABET accredited college or university preferred; however, a Bachelor of Science in an alternative engineering curriculum or Professional License (P.E.) combined with in-depth experience in power generation will be considered.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Must exhibit an exceptional degree of EDG technical expertise, creativity and resourcefulness and demonstrate ability to make independent prudent decisions and assess risk and understand consequences and impact of actions
- Previous work experience at a diesel generator vendor fab or test facility a plus
- Must possess deep expertise to lead and participate in professional committees and develop information that extends knowledge and integrates lessons learned
- Experience as Chairperson/ Vice Chairperson in a EDG Owners Groups a plus

- An ability to solve problems and make sound engineering decisions, based on experience and appropriate industry practices, to make timely decisions which might impact plant safety and reliability

Other Requirements:
- Candidate must maintain unescorted site access and NRC Fitness for Duty
- Must work alternate shifts and extended hours during Maintenance Outages
