Job Summary

The University of Michigan-Flint is experiencing significant growth in research awards from NSF, NIH, IES and other top funding agencies. The Research Development Officer supports the research enterprise in the Office of Research and Economic Development (ORED) at the University of Michigan-Flint.

The Research Development Officer reports to the director of the Office of Research and supports strategic efforts to catalyze interdisciplinary research teams for relevant solicitations and increasing the probability of selection success in grant awards via multiple research development activities. The Research Development Officer serves as a liaison for faculty to enhance collaboration opportunities.

This position is grant funded and is part of a larger five-year NSF funded project to grow externally funded research activity and industry-engagement.

Responsibilities*

  • Work with the Director of the Office of Research and senior faculty to develop research mentoring strategies to enhance research success for faculty across the institution;
  • Facilitate cross-unit links, interdisciplinary research, and collaboration;
  • Work with faculty and staff teams to develop grant proposals for key funding opportunities, and identify high impact opportunities; tasks include creating timelines and checklists, tracking proposal writing progress, drafting supporting documents, and proposal editing with a goal of increasing the quality of submitted proposals;
  • Promote a collegial research culture by providing multiple opportunities (events and workshops) for researchers to meet informally and develop shared interests and initiatives including grants-writing seminars, ideation sessions, in addition to providing a range of project management services to increase ambition and readiness for large-scale funding opportunities;
  • Be a liaison and point person for information related to funded research grants, award recipient lists and other research-related information. In collaboration with the communications team, facilitate communication of this information for research promotion, awards celebration;
  • Liaise with Office of Research pre-award and post-award research administrators to ensure appropriate grant and project management processes such that quality grant applications are delivered promptly and university requirements are met;
  • Work with the academic leadership in the 5 schools and colleges to develop long-term strategic plans for research on the campus;
  • Participate in professional development opportunities (e.g. University of Michigan Research Development Community of Practice, U-M conferences, grant-writing workshops, NORDP annual meetings);

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field
  • Substantive experience writing research proposals and/or leading research funding efforts from ideation through to proposal drafting and submission
  • Experience across diverse sponsors or federal agencies
  • Experience reviewing and editing grant proposals, supporting documents and budgets
  • Experience writing short copy (web-based text), long copy (research proposals and reports), social media promotion and research presentation material (power point) for broad audiences

Modes of Work

Hybrid:

The work requirements allow both onsite and offsite work and an employee has an expected recurring onsite presence. On occasion, the employee may be required and must be available to work onsite more frequently if necessitated by unit leadership or their designee and/or the job requirements.

Background Screening

The University of Michigan conducts background checks on all job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background checks.  Background checks are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Reporting Act.
