This job contributes to REI’s success through the development, implementation and oversight of a comprehensive environmental, health and safety program for the Co-op to reduce risk and losses due to accidents, injuries, compliance violations, or hazardous conditions. This position is responsible for the strategic direction of this program for all locations and operations.
Responsibilities and Qualifications

- Identifies and communicates key responsibilities and practices to ensure the organization promotes a successful attitude, confidence in leadership, and teamwork to achieve business results.
- Supports the implementation of company programs, procedures, methods and practices to promote REI key messages.
- Challenges and inspires employees to achieve business results.
- Ensures employees adhere to legal and operational compliance requirements.
- Oversees training and development of employees directly and indirectly managed and makes effective staffing decisions.
- Conducts and ensures the completion of performance reviews.
- Provides coaching, direction and leadership support to employees in order to achieve department, company and customer results.
- Establishes and maintains visibility within the department.
- Monitors operational statistics, reports trends, variances and issues, and takes appropriate action.
- Establishes operational plans and goals for the Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) programs of the Co-op; including Stores, Supply Chain, Experiences and Headquarters teams.
- Partners cross-divisionally to establish clear ownership and accountability for the EHS program at all levels.
- Guides operational management teams to prepare, support and audit location-specific performance and improvement goals annually.
- Leads a team to plan and implement safety policies and procedures in compliance with local, state, and federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) rules and regulations.
- Plans and conducts periodic audits, inspections and walkthroughs of assigned facilities to validate compliance to company standards and local, state, and federal agency regulations including OSHA, EPA, and DOT.
- Collaborates with Risk Management in the identification, evaluation and control of risks across the coop.
- Partners with operational management teams to develop action plans to address EHS deficiencies.
- Reviews findings from accident investigations, facilities inspections, and/or environmental testing.
- Ensures inspection programs for facilities, machinery, and safety equipment are being administered effectively to identify and correct potential hazards, and to ensure safety regulation compliance.
- Utilizes systems, technology and analytics to drive awareness and overall program success.
- Oversees the recommendation process and product changes to reduce employee exposure to workplace hazards.
- Provides oversight to the third-party injury prevention service to ensure effectiveness and continuity across all sites.
- Leads or participates on cross-functional improvement teams.
- Establishes and supports worker training in areas such as safety regulations, company health and safety policies, use of safety equipment, violence in the workplace, incident investigation, hazmat processes and disposal, and relevant industry issues.
- As part of the Asset Protection & Risk management team, serve as a partner and resource for crisis/emergency situations including natural disasters and workplace violence etc.
Qualifications:
- 10+ years of progressive work experience in the Environmental, Health & Safety discipline.
- Five or more years with demonstrated ability to lead and manage teams to support program change successfully.
- Has a successful history of utilizing a partnership-focused and data-led leadership methodology.
- Extensive knowledge of EHS principles as well as state and federal requirements.
- Experience developing and implementing safety management systems.
- Independent, self-directed and results-oriented individual.
- Builds capacity of individuals and teams through effective employee development, involvement, communication, and supervision efforts.

- Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience
- Preferred: CSP certification or advanced degree with an environmental health & safety focus

Pay Range
$96,400.00 - $154,300.00 per year
