The Grassland Monitoring Technician (GMT) performs a variety of routine tasks that assists the implementation of work plans within the business unit. The GMT provides administrative assistance to program or preserve staff. They provide research assistance to a program or preserve tasks, project management and/or general assistance to program or preserve staff. They may work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, in hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstance.

The Grassland Monitoring Technician will be an integral part of a long-term Adaptive Management project aimed at improving the condition of the plant communities on TNC's native prairie preserves. The Technician will also participate in a habitat assessment project for the federally threatened Dakota skipper butterfly. The position start date is flexible, with an ideal date of June 16, 2025. The Technician will work for 10 weeks from start date, traveling to several TNC preserves across MN, ND, and SD during this period.
The Technician will gain exposure to two science and conservation initiatives within our chapter's grassland ecosystems. TNC is working with partners to evaluate broad changes in condition of native grasslands in response to grazing and fire. The project is a collaborative effort in which multiple agencies and organizations have overlapping goals (TNC, Minnesota Dept. of Natural Resources, USFWS, etc.). Partners in this work are coordinating sampling to compare data and management practices across ownerships throughout the prairie region. With the assistance of the Technician, TNC will revisit sites on which management has been implemented to measure the outcomes. The Technician will fill a critical role in helping our chapter to close the adaptive management loop in our grassland conservation work. The Technician will also spend time contributing to monitoring outcomes for the impacts of fire on habitat quality for the federally threatened Dakota skipper butterfly. For both of these projects, the Technician will have the opportunity to travel to many of TNC's preserves across Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota experiencing first-hand the beauty of many high-quality native prairie landscapes.
Responsibilities & Scope:

  • Maintain project records and participate in data collection, data entry and data management.
  • Use field botanical skills to conduct surveys spending the majority of their time outdoors, experiencing the beauty of the Great Plains prairies. Experience surveying and identifying grassland plants in the upper Midwest or Great Plains is a plus.
  • Travel to many of TNC's preserves across the Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota region.
  • May perform administrative work related to project and data management.
  • Coordinate closely together with the assistance of TNC staff on vegetation monitoring in grassland systems.
  • After a training period, the Technician will often be in the field during the day working independently from their direct supervisor; with staff around in the mornings and afternoons for questions and interaction.
  • May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, in hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances.

WHAT YOU'LL BRING
  • Associates Degree in natural resources; environmental studies or equivalent combination of education and 6 months' experience.
  • Experience managing and prioritizing tasks from multiple sources.

SALARY INFORMATION

The starting pay range for a candidate selected for this position is generally within the range of $18.00 to $19.00 hourly rate. This range only applies to candidates whose country of employment is the USA. Where a successful candidate's actual pay will fall within this range will be based on a variety of factors, including, for example, the candidate's location, qualifications, specific skills, and experience. Please note countries outside the USA would have a different pay range in the local currency based on the local labor market, and not tied to USA pay or ranges. Your geographic location will be confirmed during the recruitment.
